The Pony Express carried mail between Sacramento, CA and St Joseph MO. It was rendered obsolete by the telegraph, only operating for 19 months (April 1860 to Oct 1861. The route had 184 stations for horse and rider exchanges. Riders were small, light-weight men (up to 120 lbs) and typically rode 75 miles a day. A rider recruiting advertisement allegedly read: Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.
