While waiting for the elk to come out in the evening, I was taking pictures of the creek in the Cataloochee Valley when I just happened to look up and to see this barred owl sitting on the limb over the creek, pretty as you please. I quietly went back to the car to get the telephoto lens, glad to find the owl still in place when I returned. I did get pictures of elk later, but snapping some photos of the owl was the real highlight of the night.
