While traveling to California, we decided to take the ferry Santa Cruz, one of the Channel Islands. Little did I realize that the Channel Islands are the US's version of the Galapagos Islands. Animals live on the islands that exist nowhere else, including this Island Fox. At one-third the size of the related gray fox, these carnivores resemble cuddly housecats. The foxes have no natural predators so are active during the day, and we caught this adorable guy waking up from his midafternoon nap.
