We were told we might see desert tortoises near water while hiking in Joshua Tree Park. When we got to a water source on the 49 Palms trail, we didn't spot any. About two miles after turning back, we were lucky to see a tortoise! Other hikers told us that seeing one was the "holy grail' of Joshua Tree National Park.
