In the heart of the basin lies the strange and majestic Mono Lake. Mono Lake is at least 750,000 years old. Mono Lake is saltier than the ocean. The tufa tower formations show what nature can do with a few basic elements. Tufa (calcium carbonate) is formed when fresh water springs (calcium) combines with alkaline water (carbonate).
