This is Purple Fringe (Silky Phacelia), a native flower found at high elevations on rocky slopes in the summer. I was at 9,100 feet above sea level, at a pull-off on the Beartooth Highway in southwestern Montana. I could never have gotten down to this patch of purple flowers to photograph them up close--it was much too steep a slope with the terrain covered in loose, gravelly rock. Instead, I used a large boulder the size of my car as a tripod, and aimed my camera's zoom lens downward.
