This colorful crustose lichen is growing on rocks on a steep downward mountain slope at 10,100 feet above sea level. I found it on a pull-off of the scenic Beartooth Highway in northwestern Wyoming. This type of crustose lichen forms very slowly but is long-lived. It grows about 1-2 mm. in diameter per year; and, since it takes 25.4 mm. to make up an inch, that's pretty slow-growing.
