Bear Lodge, as many Northern Plains Native Americans refer to this tower, is often used for ceremonies, vision quests, and spiritual connections. The national park service promotes a voluntary ban on climbing during the month of June every year, out of respect for native and indigenous peoples. Here, red and white prayer cloths have been hung on Ponderosa pine trees which surround the tower's base.
