This is part of the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (also called Wyoming 296), which is a federally-designated 46-mile scenic byway linking Cody, Wyoming to the Beartooth Highway and the northeast gate entrance of Yellowstone National Park. It follows the route Chief Joseph took as he led the Nez Perce Indians out of the Yellowstone National Park area and into Montana in 1877 in their attempt to flee the U.S. Calvary and escape into Canada. The scenic road winds through the Shoshone National Forest.
