While stopping to take a photo of the picturesque Atlantic coastline in Acadia National Park in Maine, I noticed this golden mushroom (Amanita muscaria). While its small stature makes it take a backseat to all the surrounding largescale scenery, its vital role in the ecosystem should not be overlooked. Mushrooms recylce nutrients (involved in carbon recycling) enabling the survival of other plants and animal species. Acadia National Park hosts more than 400 indigenous plant species.
